This is where a square of the chart contains two colours. Usually, it is left to the stitcher to decide which stitch will be made the 3/4 and which the 1/4.
The printed symbol chart shows two symbols of reduced size at opposite corners of the square.
These stitches could also be used with tapestry designs if splitting a double canvas.
