Knitting is different to cross stitch and tapestry design in that the stitch is not square. It is thus necessary to set the count (stitches per inch) separately for the vertical and horizontal directions. Cross Stitch Professional for Windows allows fractional numbers of stitches per inch in both horizontal and vertical directions for this purpose.
