Split Cross Stitch

A split cross stitch is simply a standard cross but taking up either half the normal width or half the normal height. It allows much more detail to be used in charts and is particularly effective in allowing thin vertical or horizontal lines.

The chart shows a reduced size symbol near to the top, bottom, left or right side of the grid square. Two split crosses in the same grid square are thus represented by two symbols side by side or one above the other.

Split crosses can also straddle a stitch position (half in one square and half in the next square) in which case the symbol is shown over the grid line.
